RTU MIREA hosted the Superfinal of the All-Russian Drone Racing League RDR

17.01.2022

0n January 16, to determine the champion, the strongest athletes gathered at RTU MIREA, which followed the results of the selection of two of the most difficult seasons of the RDR drone league 2020 and 2021. Several hundred pilots across the country completed a total of about 50 contest stages and competitions.

To hold the RDR Superfinal at MIREA RTU, a huge indoor sports arena with an area of more than 4,000 m² was used, which housed a dozen bright LED space structures that make up a single 3D racing track for drones.

The pilots were to overcome all the obstacles at a speed and reach the finish line first. For three hours of continuous races, out of 16 participants, four were selected, who competed for the podium in a head-to-head confrontation.

Aleksey Stankevich from Moscow became the leader jf the event. His teammate Evgeny Abramov finished second. The way of Mark Loginov from Taganrog to the third place was dramatic indeed. He made a mistake at the very beginning of the competition, which threw him far down the standings. However, he fought to the end and eventually closed the top three winners of the national championship

The competitions were broadcast on several portals on the Internet simultaneously gathering a total audience of more than 23,000 people. This shows a rather intense interest in such a new high-tech sport as drone racing.

The event was organized with the support of the Institute of Artificial Intelligence of RTU MIREA.

“Many of our students and staff have gained their first experience of judging competitions of such a high level and, after undergoing additional theoretical training, got the opportunity to be certified as judges of the 3rd category in drone racing,” said Alexey Romanov, Ph.D., Associate Professor of the Institute of Artificial Intelligence of RTU MIREA. “We also express our gratitude to the Department of Educational and Social Work, the Department of Civil Defense and Emergencies and the press service of RTU MIREA for their help in holding the competition.”
