27.03.2019
Between March 20 and 22, the South-West State University of the city of Kursk (KSU) hosted under the auspices of the Association of Foreign Students of Russia and with the support of the Russkiy Mir Foundation, the face-to-face stage of the VII All-Russian Russian Language Olympiad among foreign students educated in Russian universities.

Out of the 500 participants in the absentee online stage, 50 finalists from 17 cities of Russia were selected for the competition. A team of six people competed in Kursk for the honor of our University under the guidance of S.S. Gulyants, senior lecturer of the Russian Language Department (Russian as a foreign language). Those were students from Haiti, Equatorial Guinea, Angola, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan.

The SWSU gave a hearty welcome to the participants in the event from 22 Russian universities: the contestants and the escorting staff were accommodated in a comfortable hotel in the city center; the transfer to the university campus where the main events of the Olympiad took place was organized. The students were taken on a sightseeing tour of the city famous for its military glory. Students and the staff members of the participating universities visited the memorial complex dedicated to the Battle of Kursk, the Red Square and the Znamensky Cathedral; they also had an educational tour of the city’s architectural monuments, learnt about the history and traditions of the city. A tour of the University museum organized for the lecturers accompanying the students was given by Professor V.V. Korovin, Doctor of Historical Sciences.

Some students and university lecturers visited on their own the Kursk Nightingale museum.

The Organizing Committee welcomed the RTU MIREA team with particular attention, since the fame of our international ensemble "Madagascar" (the winner of international and All-Russian festivals) got far ahead of the group arriving in Kursk.
S.G. Emelyanov, Rector of the University, Alsindor Robinson, representative of the Association of Foreign Students of Russia and the heads of the Institute of International Education at the South-Caucasian University spoke at the opening and closing ceremonies. The competition program included an essay on a specific topic and the defense of the project dedicated to the 220th anniversary of
A.S. Pushkin, the greatest Russian poet. Participants were reciting poetry, reading fairy tales, singing romances to Pushkin’s lyrics, and also presented their own research on the creative work and biography of the poet.

The results of the Olympiad were announced at the award ceremony on March 22 at the Friendship Concert where each team presented a concert number prepared in advance. The organizers and the guests of the Festival enjoyed greatly the wonderful saxophone playing by Nikolai Filibert, an RTU MIREA student from Haiti.

The 1st place went to Laerisu Gabriel, a student of the RTU MIREA Institute of International Education from Angola, who scored the highest number of points for his essay and the defense of the project Works of A.S. Pushkin and music. President of the AFS and Rector of the South-West State University awarded Laersiu the winner’s diploma and presented an ASUS laptop as a gift to him. Members of the Arbiter’s Panel specially emphasized that the winner in the Russian language Olympiad was from Africa which was a rare case indeed.

The 2nd place winner in the Near abroad nomination was Sadokat Matyakubova, an RTU MIREA student from Uzbekistan. She had very strong rivals from the former Soviet republics, who actually grew up and were educated in Russia, but Sadokat stood up to the challenge. She is a strong-willed and responsible person and is well versed in Russian culture and literature, so she is determined to be the first at the next competition.

Our Olympians are real heroes indeed. For three intense days crammed with activity, they would help one another in everything, provide support and assistance to their team members, and give their fellow students a helping hand in difficult situations: in a word, they acted as a single consolidated team. The victory of one is the merit of all. In his welcoming speech
S.G. Emelyanov, Rector of the SWSU, paid special attention to a group of students from
RTU MIREA and expressed his gratitude to Stanislav Alekseevich Kudzh.

The University takes pride in you, dear friends! Keep it up!
