RTU MIREA Research Praised by CIS Government Heads

The “Atom” pavilion at the VDNKh exhibition complex hosted the International Conference on Science and Technology Cooperation, held as part of the Eurasian Intergovernmental Council session. The conference demonstrated some promising projects developed by international teams of young scientists to CIS (Commonwealth of Independent States) prime ministers, targeting the development of advanced technologies within the CIS space.

RTU MIREA spearheaded the initiative, managing candidate selection, expert review, and finalist preparation. The selection was highly competitive, as from over 60 entries, just 16 projects were advanced to in-person defense before the Young Scientists Congress at Sirius in November. Out of those, the top 6 were presented to the heads of government, spanning biotechnology, industrial diagnostics, and environmental safety.

The project titled “Clean Technologies” was among the finalists. It was developed by a unique 8-nation team of young CIS researchers. The combined RTU MIREA team, coached by Assoc. Prof. Ye.D. Ryabkov, and the RAS Petrochemical Synthesis Institute (INKhS) team, coached by Prof A.V. Volkov, excelled at every stage and demonstrated their innovative developments in combined electrolytic-plasma/membrane water purification processes producing clean water and extracting valuable components.

This technology is aimed at deep processing of landfill leachate. RTU MIREA student Annagul Kuvadova (Turkmenistan) personally presented the project to the heads of government, giving a detailed explanation of the method’s principles and advantages in removing organic pollutants. The head of the INKhS Youth Laboratory, Stepan Bazhenov, covered the method of membrane separation to remove salts and heavy metals. Combining electrolytic plasma processing with membrane techniques cuts energy consumption and equipment size by 70%. Where adopted at operating industrial facilities, the method’s efficiency rate has exceeded 97%.

The project won high praise and evoked practical response. Prime Minister Adylbek Kasymaliev of Kyrgyzstan noted the technology’s relevance to water-scarce regions, saying: “Kyrgyzstan is ready to work with you”. Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Nikolayevich Chernyshenko of the Russian Federation proposed including all the projects presented, including “Clean Technologies,” in the implementation plan for the CIS Scientific and Technological Development Strategy.

This success at the conference powerfully demonstrates that RTU MIREA trains competitive international-level specialists and scientific teams capable of developing practical, sustainable solutions for Eurasian challenges.
